Aiming for a Deal on Climate Change

In Copenhagen, Denmark,
the United Nations Climate Change Conference opened this week.
Around fifteen thousand delegates and observers
from nearly two hundred countries are there.
Some call it "the last best chance" for an agreement
to fight climate change.

Yvo de Boer is the top climate official at the United Nations.

YVO DE BOER: "The time for formal statements is over.
The time for restating well known positions is past.
The time has come to reach out to each other.
I urge you to build on your achievements,
take up the work that has already been done
and turn it into real action."

But there are questions about how much can be done,
and how an agreement would be put into action.

Making Better Concrete With Rice?

Rice hulls, or husks, are the protective coverings on grains of rice.
Rice with just its hull removed is brown rice.
Rice without its hull or bran is white rice.

Once rice is harvested, the hulls are out of a job.
They may be taken to landfills or burned.
Sometimes they are used to absorb waste in chicken houses.
Other times they are used to amend soil.

Project Finds New Homes for Unwanted Bikes From US

Americans bought an estimated eighteen and a half million bicycles last year.
Some bikes never get much riding.
Mostly they gather dust.
But a project based in Washington is putting unwanted bikes from the United States
to good use in developing countries.

Keith Oberg is the director of Bikes for the World.

KEITH OBERG:
"Everybody has an old bicycle, and it is usually not ridden.
It sits there in the garage, or basement or shed, going to waste."

Words and Their Stories: Money, Part 2

Many people believe that money makes the world go around.
Others believe that money buys happiness.
I do not agree with either idea.
But I do admit that money can make people do strange things.
Let me tell you about a person I once knew who liked to play card games for money.
He liked to gamble.

My friend Bob had a problem because he liked to gamble at all costs.
He would play at any time and at any price.
To take part in a card game such as poker, my friend would have to ante up.
He would have to pay a small amount of money at the beginning of the game.

Words and Their Stories: Money, Part 3
より 抜粋いたしました。

Words and Their Stories: Money, Part 3

Most people enjoy working for several reasons.
Their job might be fun, or they like their employer and the other people at work.
Most people I know, however, work for the money.
I do not know anyone who is loaded, or extremely rich.
Most of my friends work to earn enough money to live.
They have to make ends meet.
They have to earn enough money to pay for the things they need.
Some even live from hand to mouth.
They only have enough money for the most important things.

They struggle to earn enough money to bring home the bacon.
It can be difficult to earn enough money for a family to survive.
Sometimes, poor people even get caught short.
They do not have enough money to pay for what they need.
